Premda je mnogima ta pandemijska 2020. godina bila grozna, i to s punim pravom, splitskom tenisaču Mati Paviću bila je fantastična.

Pretvorila se u jednu od boljih u njegovoj profesionalnoj karijeri i donijela mu nominaciju za najboljeg sportaša u izboru Sportskog imena Dalmacije. S Brazilcem Brunom Soaresom osvojio je US Open i igrao finale Roland Garrosa, a njih su dvojica uz to proglašena najboljim svjetskim parom u godini. Time su na idealan način zaključili suradnju budući da će od ove godine Pavić igrati s Nikolom Mektićem, a Soares se vraća Jamieju Murrayu.

A ne tako davno, još tamo početkom ljeta, sudbina teniske sezone bila je neizvjesna. Trajala je višemjesečna pauza zbog pandemije COVIDA-19, nije se igralo od konca veljače. Odgađali su se turniri jedan za drugim, Roland Garros prebacio se na jesen, Wimbledon se otkazao... Nije izgledalo dobro.

No teniski je svijet uzvratio udarac. Pronašao je način kako ipak spasiti sezonu. Dugo su trajali razgovori i pregovori i konačno je došlo vrijeme za nastavak krajem kolovoza, ali nitko nije znao što ih čeka. Igrači su se s pravom brinuli kako će izgledati život u „balonu”, što će biti s njima ako se zaraze oni ili netko iz njihova kampa, u kakvoj će formi biti, jesu li uvjeti za putovanja i natjecanja sigurni... Množili su se upitnici, tako i našemu Mati.

Ali, igrati se moralo. I super što je bilo tako jer je 27-godišnji Splićanin imao fantastičan drugi dio sezone. Prije prekida Mate je sa Soaresom imao slabašan omjer pobjeda i poraza 4-5 uz tek jedno četvrtfinale (Rio de Janeiro). Bolji je rezultat ostvario s Nikolom Čačićem iz Srbije s kojim je osvojio Montpellier.

Ni prvi povratnički turnir u kolovozu s Brazilcem nije bio za pamćenje. S Masters 1000 turnira u Cincinnatiju (igranom u „balonu” u New Yorku) ispali su već u prvom kolu. Da im je tada netko rekao da će do kraja sezone ostvariti ono što smo nabrojali u uvodu, teško da bi mu povjerovali.

No upravo se to dogodilo. Uslijedio je US Open koji su osvojili iako nisu bili postavljeni za nositelje. Štoviše, u tom su trenutku bili tek 28. par svijeta po učinku u aktualnoj godini. U prvom kolu nadoknadili su „break” minusa u trećem setu protiv Granollersa i Zeballosa, u drugom su Sock i Withrow servirali za meč protiv njih, no sve su to Pavić i Soares preživjeli i do kraja više nisu izgubili ni set. U finalu su svladali Mektića i Koolhofa 7:5, 6:3 za njihov prvi zajednički Grand Slam naslov.

Čaroliju iz New Yorka Mate i Bruno prenijeli su u Pariz na Roland Garros koji se igrao koncem rujna i početkom listopada. Dogurali su do novog finala, ali su u njemu morali čestitati braniteljima naslova Nijemcima Krawietzu i Miesu (6:3, 7:5).

Nešto kasnije su u istom gradu poraženi i u finalu dvoranskog Masters 1000 turnira, a onda im je ostao završni obračun na ATP Finalsu u Londonu. Osim za taj trofej, borili su se i za naslov najboljeg para svijeta koji su u tom trenutku držali. Iako su u skupini pobijedili u dva od tri meča, ostali su bez polufinala i to na bizaran način. U meču Granollers/Zeballos – Melzer/Roger-Vasselin Paviću i Soaresu trebao je samo jedan osvojeni set prvog para, no Granollers je predao kod 6:6 u prvom setu i tako je naš tenisač ispao.

Melzer i Roger-Vasselin na kraju su ipak izravno pomogli Paviću. Naime, osvajači Australian Opena Rajeev Ram i Joe Salisbury, koji su u turnir ušli s 35 bodova zaostatka za Pavićem i Soaresom, pobjedom u polufinalu postali bi najbolji svjetski par godine, ali su izgubili od austrijsko-francuske kombinacije. Sve je, eto, stalo u jedan meč. Pavić i Soares zadržali su tih 35 bodova prednosti.

Naš je tenisač tako drugi put u karijeri godinu završio kao dio najboljeg para. Prethodno mu je to uspjelo s Oliverom Marachom 2018. godine. Sigurni smo da će imati što za reći i u novoj godini s novim partnerom Nikolom Mektićem. Ne samo na ATP Touru, već i na Olimpijskim igrama u Tokiju koje će imati posebno mjesto u planiranju kalendara.

Premda je mnogima ta pandemijska 2020. godina bila grozna, i to s punim pravom, splitskom tenisaču Mati Paviću bila je fantastična.

Pretvorila se u jednu od boljih u njegovoj profesionalnoj karijeri i donijela mu nominaciju za najboljeg sportaša u izboru Sportskog imena Dalmacije. S Brazilcem Brunom Soaresom osvojio je US Open i igrao finale Roland Garrosa, a njih su dvojica uz to proglašena najboljim svjetskim parom u godini. Time su na idealan način zaključili suradnju budući da će od ove godine Pavić igrati s Nikolom Mektićem, a Soares se vraća Jamieju Murrayu.

A ne tako davno, još tamo početkom ljeta, sudbina teniske sezone bila je neizvjesna. Trajala je višemjesečna pauza zbog pandemije COVIDA-19, nije se igralo od konca veljače. Odgađali su se turniri jedan za drugim, Roland Garros prebacio se na jesen, Wimbledon se otkazao... Nije izgledalo dobro.

No teniski je svijet uzvratio udarac. Pronašao je način kako ipak spasiti sezonu. Dugo su trajali razgovori i pregovori i konačno je došlo vrijeme za nastavak krajem kolovoza, ali nitko nije znao što ih čeka. Igrači su se s pravom brinuli kako će izgledati život u „balonu”, što će biti s njima ako se zaraze oni ili netko iz njihova kampa, u kakvoj će formi biti, jesu li uvjeti za putovanja i natjecanja sigurni... Množili su se upitnici, tako i našemu Mati.

Ali, igrati se moralo. I super što je bilo tako jer je 27-godišnji Splićanin imao fantastičan drugi dio sezone. Prije prekida Mate je sa Soaresom imao slabašan omjer pobjeda i poraza 4-5 uz tek jedno četvrtfinale (Rio de Janeiro). Bolji je rezultat ostvario s Nikolom Čačićem iz Srbije s kojim je osvojio Montpellier.

Ni prvi povratnički turnir u kolovozu s Brazilcem nije bio za pamćenje. S Masters 1000 turnira u Cincinnatiju (igranom u „balonu” u New Yorku) ispali su već u prvom kolu. Da im je tada netko rekao da će do kraja sezone ostvariti ono što smo nabrojali u uvodu, teško da bi mu povjerovali.

No upravo se to dogodilo. Uslijedio je US Open koji su osvojili iako nisu bili postavljeni za nositelje. Štoviše, u tom su trenutku bili tek 28. par svijeta po učinku u aktualnoj godini. U prvom kolu nadoknadili su „break” minusa u trećem setu protiv Granollersa i Zeballosa, u drugom su Sock i Withrow servirali za meč protiv njih, no sve su to Pavić i Soares preživjeli i do kraja više nisu izgubili ni set. U finalu su svladali Mektića i Koolhofa 7:5, 6:3 za njihov prvi zajednički Grand Slam naslov.

Čaroliju iz New Yorka Mate i Bruno prenijeli su u Pariz na Roland Garros koji se igrao koncem rujna i početkom listopada. Dogurali su do novog finala, ali su u njemu morali čestitati braniteljima naslova Nijemcima Krawietzu i Miesu (6:3, 7:5).

Nešto kasnije su u istom gradu poraženi i u finalu dvoranskog Masters 1000 turnira, a onda im je ostao završni obračun na ATP Finalsu u Londonu. Osim za taj trofej, borili su se i za naslov najboljeg para svijeta koji su u tom trenutku držali. Iako su u skupini pobijedili u dva od tri meča, ostali su bez polufinala i to na bizaran način. U meču Granollers/Zeballos – Melzer/Roger-Vasselin Paviću i Soaresu trebao je samo jedan osvojeni set prvog para, no Granollers je predao kod 6:6 u prvom setu i tako je naš tenisač ispao.

Melzer i Roger-Vasselin na kraju su ipak izravno pomogli Paviću. Naime, osvajači Australian Opena Rajeev Ram i Joe Salisbury, koji su u turnir ušli s 35 bodova zaostatka za Pavićem i Soaresom, pobjedom u polufinalu postali bi najbolji svjetski par godine, ali su izgubili od austrijsko-francuske kombinacije. Sve je, eto, stalo u jedan meč. Pavić i Soares zadržali su tih 35 bodova prednosti.

Naš je tenisač tako drugi put u karijeri godinu završio kao dio najboljeg para. Prethodno mu je to uspjelo s Oliverom Marachom 2018. godine. Sigurni smo da će imati što za reći i u novoj godini s novim partnerom Nikolom Mektićem. Ne samo na ATP Touru, već i na Olimpijskim igrama u Tokiju koje će imati posebno mjesto u planiranju kalendara.

Premda je mnogima ta pandemijska 2020. godina bila grozna, i to s punim pravom, splitskom tenisaču Mati Paviću bila je fantastična.

Pretvorila se u jednu od boljih u njegovoj profesionalnoj karijeri i donijela mu nominaciju za najboljeg sportaša u izboru Sportskog imena Dalmacije. S Brazilcem Brunom Soaresom osvojio je US Open i igrao finale Roland Garrosa, a njih su dvojica uz to proglašena najboljim svjetskim parom u godini. Time su na idealan način zaključili suradnju budući da će od ove godine Pavić igrati s Nikolom Mektićem, a Soares se vraća Jamieju Murrayu.

A ne tako davno, još tamo početkom ljeta, sudbina teniske sezone bila je neizvjesna. Trajala je višemjesečna pauza zbog pandemije COVIDA-19, nije se igralo od konca veljače. Odgađali su se turniri jedan za drugim, Ro...
