Ako ste odgledali dvije sezone serije "Babylon Berlin" (a to su učinili svi koji drže do sebe), možete postaviti pitanje zašto biste se sada trebali hvatati ukoštac s debelim sveskom (od gotovo 500 stranica) krimića Volkera Kutschera, po kojemu je velika televizijska uspješnica snimljena. Razloga za to najmanje su dva. Prvi je, naravno, načelni: radi se o dvije potpuno različite pripovjedne forme. Drugi je vrlo praktičan: premda su i knjiga i serija dojmljive povijesne freske ogrnute u ruho detektivskog žanra, u mnogim se potankostima razlikuju.

Za početak, inspektor Gereon Rath, noseći lik romana "Jedan neriješen slučaj" (preveo ga je Nikola Cvetković) i još sedam naslova iz weimarskog ciklusa, malo se razlikuje od svoga televizijskog imenjaka. Viši je nego na ekranu, ne pati od PTSP-a što ga je zaradio u Prvom svjetskom ratu, nije ovisnik, ne proždire ga krivnja zbog bratove smrti i nije zaljubljen u svoju šogoricu. Imao je sreće pa je vojnu obuku završio u pravi čas: dok se spremao otići na front, Njemačka je kapitulirala. U ratu je izgubio starijeg brata, a zbog rata mlađeg, koji se u strahu od mobilizacije, na užas roditelja, preselio u Sjedinjene Američke Države.

POLICIJSKA ARISTOKRACIJA

Gereon je policijsku karijeru započeo u rodnome Kölnu, nastavljajući stopama svog oca koji se uspeo do šefovske časti, društvenog ugleda i reputacije nepopustljiva čovjeka. Kad u jednoj akciji slučajno ustrijeli čovjeka, naći će se na udaru lokalnih novinara, pa će ga otac poslati u Berlin da tamo nastavi graditi karijeru pod paskom njegova staroga prijatelja. U dekadentnoj metropoli rasporedit će ga u Odjel za moral, koji, doduše, ima pune ruke posla, ali od one vrste koja Gereona ne ispunjava zadovoljstvom, jer ga ne vesele hapšenja prostitutki, makroa i ljudi umiješanih u snimanje pornografskih filmova.

I književni lik Charlotte Ritter razlikuje se od svoje televizijske parnjakinje. U libru ona nije prostitutka koja živi u zastrašujućem siromaštvu grijana nadom da bi jednoga dana mogla postati detektivkom. Već radi u policiji kao stenografkinja i asistentica, ali na pola radnog vremena, jer studira pravo.

U Kutscherovoj, dakle, izvornoj verziji, glavni junaci nešto su manje nagnječeni traumatičnim obiteljskim, odnosno privatnim iskustvima, što ih, međutim, ne čini manje slojevitim karakterima. Dapače, da su i u knjizi jednako postavljeni kao u televizijskoj seriji epskoga trajanja, jedva da bi se mogli baviti kriminalističkom intrigom, jer bi se morali hrvati sa svojim svakodnevnim demonima i mukama. A zamašnjak zapleta pokrenut će se kad iz rijeke bude izvučen automobil u kojemu je truplo čovjeka koji je prije smrti zvjerski mučen i drogiran. Ambiciozni Rath shvatit će taj zagonetni zločin kao dobrodošlu priliku da se izvuče iz Odjela za nemoral i postane dijelom policijske aristokracije, Odjela za ubojstva. Počet će istraživati na svoju ruku i vrlo brzo shvatiti kako se ne radi o izdvojenom kriminalističkom slučaju, nego tek o jednog epizodi složene, misteriozne urote koja prijeti da bi mogla sažvakati mladog istražitelja.

DOKUMENTARISTIČKA PRECIZNOST

Bez obzira na mnoge razlike između književnog predloška i njegove televizijske adaptacije, oba naslova dijele ključno svojstvo: radi se o žanrovski besprijekornim, napetim storijama koje moćno i s dokumentarističkom preciznošću oživljavaju jedno podneblje i epohu. Berlin 1929. dekadentna je košnica u kojoj sve vrije: dok se običan svijet pokušava otresti trauma rata te poratnog poniženja i oskudice tražeći utočište u razvratnim noćnim zabavištima, politički život polako dostiže točku vrenja. Socijalisti su zaokupljeni mržnjom prema komunistima, pa ne stižu opaziti da nacistički pokret raste iz dana u dan, oslanjajući se na frustrirane militariste i razočarane ratne veterane. Kao da nema vlastitih problema, Njemačka ih još uvozi. Berlin je pun Rusa svih ideoloških profila: po njemu rovare i caristi, i čekisti, i komunistički otpadnici, a sve ih natkriljuje moćna nadideološka sila, beskrupulozni kriminalci.

Kutscher kao da nije književnik nego operater vremeplova, on čitateljima ne opisuje Weimarsku republiku, nego ih tamo vodi, ravno na ulice velikoga grada koji još i ne sluti da će ga poharati veliko zlo. Autor koji ništa ne duguje suvremenim trendovima u kriminalističkoj prozi, nego je pravovjerni sljedbenik hard-boiled škole (ali bez ironijskih digresija i humornih omekšivača), zaslužuje punu pažnju ne samo ljubitelja žanrovske literature, nego i svih koji knjige doživljavaju kao vize za slobodna putovanja u druge, paralelne svjetove.

Ako ste odgledali dvije sezone serije "Babylon Berlin" (a to su učinili svi koji drže do sebe), možete postaviti pitanje zašto biste se sada trebali hvatati ukoštac s debelim sveskom (od gotovo 500 stranica) krimića Volkera Kutschera, po kojemu je velika televizijska uspješnica snimljena. Drugi je vrlo praktičan: premda su i knjiga i serija dojmljive povijesne freske ogrnute u ruho detektivskog žanra, u mnogim se potankostima razlikuju.

Za početak, inspektor Gereon Rath, noseći lik romana "Jedan neriješen slučaj" (preveo ga je Nikola Cvetković) i još sedam naslova iz weimarskog ciklusa, malo se razlikuje od svoga televizijskog imenjaka. Viši je nego na ekranu, ne pati od PTSP-a što ga je zaradio u Prvom svjetskom ratu, nije ovisnik, ne proždire ga krivnja zbog bratove smrti i nije zaljubljen u svoju šogoricu. Imao je sreće pa je vojnu obuku završio u pravi čas: dok se spremao otići na front, Njemačka je kapitulirala. U ratu je izgubio starijeg brata, a zbog rata mlađeg, koji se u strahu od mobilizacije, na užas roditelja, preselio u Sjedinjene Američke Države.

POLICIJSKA ARISTOKRACIJA

Gereon je policijsku karijeru započeo u rodnome Kölnu, nastavljajući stopama svog oca koji se uspeo do šefovske časti, društvenog ugleda i reputacije nepopustljiva čovjeka. Kad u jednoj akciji slučajno ustrijeli čovjeka, naći će se na udaru lokalnih novinara, pa će ga otac poslati u Berlin da tamo nastavi graditi karijeru pod paskom njegova staroga prijatelja. U dekadentnoj metropoli rasporedit će ga u Odjel za moral, koji, doduše, ima pune ruke posla, ali od one vrste koja Gereona ne ispunjava zadovoljstvom, jer ga ne vesele hapšenja prostitutki, makroa i ljudi umiješanih u snimanje pornografskih filmova.

I književni lik Charlotte Ritter razlikuje se od svoje televizijske parnjakinje. U libru ona nije prostitutka koja živi u zastrašujućem siromaštvu grijana nadom da bi jednoga dana mogla postati detektivkom. Već radi u policiji kao stenografkinja i asistentica, ali na pola radnog vremena, jer studira pravo.

U Kutscherovoj, dakle, izvornoj verziji, glavni junaci nešto su manje nagnječeni traumatičnim obiteljskim, odnosno privatnim iskustvima, što ih, međutim, ne čini manje slojevitim karakterima. Dapače, da su i u knjizi jednako postavljeni kao u televizijskoj seriji epskoga trajanja, jedva da bi se mogli baviti kriminalističkom intrigom, jer bi se morali hrvati sa svojim svakodnevnim demonima i mukama. A zamašnjak zapleta pokrenut će se kad iz rijeke bude izvučen automobil u kojemu je truplo čovjeka koji je prije smrti zvjerski mučen i drogiran. Ambiciozni Rath shvatit će taj zagonetni zločin kao dobrodošlu priliku da se izvuče iz Odjela za nemoral i postane dijelom policijske aristokracije, Odjela za ubojstva. Počet će istraživati na svoju ruku i vrlo brzo shvatiti kako se ne radi o izdvojenom kriminalističkom slučaju, nego tek o jednog epizodi složene, misteriozne urote koja prijeti da bi mogla sažvakati mladog istražitelja.

DOKUMENTARISTIČKA PRECIZNOST

Bez obzira na mnoge razlike između književnog predloška i njegove televizijske adaptacije, oba naslova dijele ključno svojstvo: radi se o žanrovski besprijekornim, napetim storijama koje moćno i s dokumentarističkom preciznošću oživljavaju jedno podneblje i epohu. Berlin 1929. dekadentna je košnica u kojoj sve vrije: dok se običan svijet pokušava otresti trauma rata te poratnog poniženja i oskudice tražeći utočište u razvratnim noćnim zabavištima, politički život polako dostiže točku vrenja. Socijalisti su zaokupljeni mržnjom prema komunistima, pa ne stižu opaziti da nacistički pokret raste iz dana u dan, oslanjajući se na frustrirane militariste i razočarane ratne veterane. Kao da nema vlastitih problema, Njemačka ih još uvozi. Berlin je pun Rusa svih ideoloških profila: po njemu rovare i caristi, i čekisti, i komunistički otpadnici, a sve ih natkriljuje moćna nadideološka sila, beskrupulozni kriminalci.

Kutscher kao da nije književnik nego operater vremeplova, on čitateljima ne opisuje Weimarsku republiku, nego ih tamo vodi, ravno na ulice velikoga grada koji još i ne sluti da će ga poharati veliko zlo. Autor koji ništa ne duguje suvremenim trendovima u kriminalističkoj prozi, nego je pravovjerni sljedbenik hard-boiled škole (ali bez ironijskih digresija i humornih omekšivača), zaslužuje punu pažnju ne samo ljubitelja žanrovske literature, nego i svih koji knjige doživljavaju kao vize za slobodna putovanja u druge, paralelne svjetove.

Ako ste odgledali dvije sezone serije "Babylon Berlin" (a to su učinili svi koji drže do sebe), možete postaviti pitanje zašto biste se sada trebali hvatati ukoštac s debelim sveskom (od gotovo 500 stranica) krimića Volkera Kutschera, po kojemu je velika televizijska uspješnica snimljena. Razloga za to najmanje su dva. Prvi je, naravno, načelni: radi se o dvije potpuno različite pripovjedne forme. Drugi je vrlo praktičan: premda su i knjiga i serija dojmljive povijesne freske ogrnute u ruho detektivskog žanra, u mnogim se potankostima razlikuju.
