Na Dan Zahvalnosti 4. srpnja 2022., u mjestu Gig Harbour na pacifičkoj obali SAD-a, počela je gradnja malog hrvatskog tradicijskog broda – batane.

Mali brod s velikom ulogom predstavljat će Hrvatsku i našu maritimnu baštinu, stoljetnu tradiciju drvene brodogradnje i općenito našu pomorsku kulturu, na jednom od najvećih festivala drvenih brodova u svijetu - Wooden Boat Festival - Port Townsend u SAD-u.

Ideja se rodila još 2019. u glavi našeg povratnika, kalafata - Mikea (Michael Vlahovich / National Endowment for the Arts), koji je želio povezati svoju rodnu hrvatsku zajednicu na pacifičkoj obali SAD i mjesto svojih korijena, Sumartin i otok Brač, kroz ono što su ti ljudi imali i još uvijek imaju zajedničko – maritimnu baštinu i tradiciju drvene brodogradnje.

Mike Vlahovich rođen u Tacomi (SAD), nakon uspješne brodograditeljske karijere u SAD-u, 2017. vratio se u rodno mjesto svoga oca, Sumartin na Braču gdje je osnovao udrugu MARITIMA EDUCARE (MEA) koja se bavi očuvanjem tradicionalnog zanata brodogradnje i maritimne baštine.

MEA djeluje u Sumartinskom škveru, jednom od malobrojnih mjesta koje se još uvijek komercijalno bavi reparacijom isključivo drvenih brodova na tradicionalan način. Udruga provodi programe za djecu i mlade (radionice kalafatanja, izložbe, volonterski program...) koristeći stare donirane drvene brodove koji se obnavljaju kroz edukativne programe.

Vlahovich je odabrao batanu kao autentičnu hrvatsku ribarsku brodicu za obalno ribarenje koja će pričati hrvatsku priču u SAD-u. Porinuće je predviđeno za 3. rujna u mjestu Gig Harbour gdje se i gradi The 'Batana' Project — Gig Harbor BoatShop uz veliku proslavu za javnost.

Nakon toga batana putuje u Port Townsend na prestižni Festival gdje će biti centralna tema Building a batana: a symbol of Croatian heritage takes shape in Gig Harbor - Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival unutar izložbe „Croatian Fishing Village / Hrvatsko ribarsko selo“.

Hrvatska zajednica pacifičke obale i još nekoliko članova Maritima educare će izvoditi prezentacije, pričati priče, provoditi radionice i demonstracije u ‘’hrvatskom ribarskom selu’’ kako bi što bolje prezentirali našu maritimnu kulturu i možda potaknuli neke mlade ljude da nastave tradiciju svojih djedova.

Na Dan Zahvalnosti 4. srpnja 2022., u mjestu Gig Harbour na pacifičkoj obali SAD-a, počela je gradnja malog hrvatskog tradicijskog broda – batane.

Mali brod s velikom ulogom predstavljat će Hrvatsku i našu maritimnu baštinu, stoljetnu tradiciju drvene brodogradnje i općenito našu pomorsku kulturu, na jednom od najvećih festivala drvenih brodova u svijetu - Wooden Boat Festival - Port Townsend u SAD-u.

Ideja se rodila još 2019. u glavi našeg povratnika, kalafata - Mikea (Michael Vlahovich / National Endowment for the Arts), koji je želio povezati svoju rodnu hrvatsku zajednicu na pacifičkoj obali SAD i mjesto svojih korijena, Sumartin i otok Brač, kroz ono što su ti ljudi imali i još uvijek imaju zajedničko – maritimnu baštinu i tradiciju drvene brodogradnje.

Mike Vlahovich rođen u Tacomi (SAD), nakon uspješne brodograditeljske karijere u SAD-u, 2017. vratio se u rodno mjesto svoga oca, Sumartin na Braču gdje je osnovao udrugu MARITIMA EDUCARE (MEA) koja se bavi očuvanjem tradicionalnog zanata brodogradnje i maritimne baštine.

MEA djeluje u Sumartinskom škveru, jednom od malobrojnih mjesta koje se još uvijek komercijalno bavi reparacijom isključivo drvenih brodova na tradicionalan način. Udruga provodi programe za djecu i mlade (radionice kalafatanja, izložbe, volonterski program...) koristeći stare donirane drvene brodove koji se obnavljaju kroz edukativne programe.

Vlahovich je odabrao batanu kao autentičnu hrvatsku ribarsku brodicu za obalno ribarenje koja će pričati hrvatsku priču u SAD-u. Porinuće je predviđeno za 3. rujna u mjestu Gig Harbour gdje se i gradi The 'Batana' Project — Gig Harbor BoatShop uz veliku proslavu za javnost.

Nakon toga batana putuje u Port Townsend na prestižni Festival gdje će biti centralna tema Building a batana: a symbol of Croatian heritage takes shape in Gig Harbor - Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival unutar izložbe „Croatian Fishing Village / Hrvatsko ribarsko selo“.

Hrvatska zajednica pacifičke obale i još nekoliko članova Maritima educare će izvoditi prezentacije, pričati priče, provoditi radionice i demonstracije u ‘’hrvatskom ribarskom selu’’ kako bi što bolje prezentirali našu maritimnu kulturu i možda potaknuli neke mlade ljude da nastave tradiciju svojih djedova.
