Već tri godine kod rta Franina u premanturskom podmorju ekipa podvodnih arheologa i tehničkih ronioca u organizaciji Međunarodnog centra za podvodnu arheologiju iz Zadra provodi podvodna istraživanja. U istraživanju kojeg financira Ministarstvo kulture i medija RH, sudjeluju i stručnjaci Njemačkog arheološkog instituta te pripadnici Interventne policije iz Pule. Logističku potporu pruža ronilački centar Indie iz Banjola.
Kod rta Franina, na dubini od preko dvadeset metara, pronađeni su ostaci drvenog jedrenjaka, od kojeg su na pješčanoj površini vidljiva tri željezna topa i jedno sidro. Prema prikupljenim nalazima i njihovoj dataciji može se reći da je brod ovdje potonuo krajem 16. ili početkom 17. st. Njegovo porijeklo je zasad obavijeno velom tajne, jer oprema broda i teret potječu iz različitih krajeva.
Arhivska povijesna istraživanja zasad nisu dala rezultata, pa se čeka neki sretan nalaz koji bi razotkrio tajne ovog broda. Istraživanjima je zasad utvrđeno da je brod osim keramike, raznobojnih staklenih perlica i crvenih staklenih zdjelica prevozio i teret mjedenih truba. Mjedene trube iz tog doba su vrlo rijetke i u svijetu ih je sačuvano manje od deset primjeraka.
Međutim, kod rta Franina je zasad pronađeno više desetaka raznih dijelova truba, iz kojih se može zaključiti da je brod prevozio preko petnaest cjelovitih truba što ovo nalazište čini jedinstvenim u svijetu. Svi nalazi se kontinuirano konzerviraju i restauriraju u specijaliziranom laboratoriju u Zadru i očekujemo da će restaurirani ostaci truba biti kompletirani i sastavljeni i kroz koju godinu izaći u javnost. Usporedo s arheološkim istraživanjima, na ovom nalazištu provodi se vrlo važan pionirski projekt konzerviranja željeznih topova ispod mora. Ova jedinstvena tehnoogija provodi se po prvi puta u Hrvatskoj, a u svijetu postoji samo nekoliko takvih projekata.
Zasad je uspješno očišćen izaštićen prvi od tri topa, a ove godine započeli su radovi i na drugom.O metodama koje se primjenjuju u zaštiti ovog nalazišta već je izvješteno na nekoliko važnih svjetskih znanstvenih konferencija. Kada se kroz nekoliko godina sustav takve zaštite usavrši u praksi, počet će se primjenjivati na svih potonulim borodovima sa željeznom oplatom, topovima i sličnim ostacima. Na taj način će podvodna kulturna baština biti očuvana kroz mnogo duže razdoblje i biti dostupnija javnosti.

Već tri godine kod rta Franina u premanturskom podmorju ekipa podvodnih arheologa i tehničkih ronioca u organizaciji Međunarodnog centra za podvodnu arheologiju iz Zadra provodi podvodna istraživanja. U istraživanju kojeg financira Ministarstvo kulture i medija RH, sudjeluju i stručnjaci Njemačkog arheološkog instituta te pripadnici Interventne policije iz Pule. Logističku potporu pruža ronilački centar Indie iz Banjola.
Kod rta Franina, na dubini od preko dvadeset metara, pronađeni su ostaci drvenog jedrenjaka, od kojeg su na pješčanoj površini vidljiva tri željezna topa i jedno sidro. Prema prikupljenim nalazima i njihovoj dataciji može se reći da je brod ovdje potonuo krajem 16. ili početkom 17. st. Njegovo porijeklo je zasad obavijeno velom tajne, jer oprema broda i teret potječu iz različitih krajeva.
Arhivska povijesna istraživanja zasad nisu dala rezultata, pa se čeka neki sretan nalaz koji bi razotkrio tajne ovog broda. Istraživanjima je zasad utvrđeno da je brod osim keramike, raznobojnih staklenih perlica i crvenih staklenih zdjelica prevozio i teret mjedenih truba. Mjedene trube iz tog doba su vrlo rijetke i u svijetu ih je sačuvano manje od deset primjeraka.
Međutim, kod rta Franina je zasad pronađeno više desetaka raznih dijelova truba, iz kojih se može zaključiti da je brod prevozio preko petnaest cjelovitih truba što ovo nalazište čini jedinstvenim u svijetu. Svi nalazi se kontinuirano konzerviraju i restauriraju u specijaliziranom laboratoriju u Zadru i očekujemo da će restaurirani ostaci truba biti kompletirani i sastavljeni i kroz koju godinu izaći u javnost. Usporedo s arheološkim istraživanjima, na ovom nalazištu provodi se vrlo važan pionirski projekt konzerviranja željeznih topova ispod mora. Ova jedinstvena tehnoogija provodi se po prvi puta u Hrvatskoj, a u svijetu postoji samo nekoliko takvih projekata.
Zasad je uspješno očišćen izaštićen prvi od tri topa, a ove godine započeli su radovi i na drugom.O metodama koje se primjenjuju u zaštiti ovog nalazišta već je izvješteno na nekoliko važnih svjetskih znanstvenih konferencija. Kada se kroz nekoliko godina sustav takve zaštite usavrši u praksi, počet će se primjenjivati na svih potonulim borodovima sa željeznom oplatom, topovima i sličnim ostacima. Na taj način će podvodna kulturna baština biti očuvana kroz mnogo duže razdoblje i biti dostupnija javnosti.
