Dva britanska arheologa kreću u Hrvatsku na misiju mapiranja drevnih krajolika izgubljenih u morima prije više tisuća godina, "prvu takve vrste".

Simon Fitch sa Sveučilišta u Bradfordu i Richard Bates sa Sveučilišta St. Andrews doći će u Split na petodnevno istraživanje jadranskog podmorja u sklopu projekta "Life on the Edge" koji će britanska agencija za istraživanje i inovacije (UKRI) financirati s milijun funti.

Pridružit će im se Vedran Barbarić sa Sveučilišta u Splitu, kao dio pilot-tima za mapiranje potopljenih krajolika u dijelovima Jadrana i Sjevernog mora. Te mape će se poslije moći analizirati u potrazi za tragovima o životima ljudi koji su tamo živjeli u kasnom paleolitiku.

– Ovo je prvi put da se netko udaljava više od 500 metara od obale Jadrana kako bi mapirao morsko dno – rekao je dr. Fitch, geoarheolog. "Znamo da su ljudi nekoć živjeli na kopnu tamo dolje jer koćarice redovito iskopavaju artefakte. Ovdje se radi o otkrivanju tko smo kao vrsta i odakle dolazimo", dodao je.

Fitch je rekao da su razine mora bile do 100 metara niže tijekom kasnog paleolitika u usporedbi sa sadašnjošću.

– Imamo nepotpunu sliku povijesti čovječanstva. Ako se vratimo u prošlost, u razdoblje poznato kao kasni paleolitik – dakle, prije između 24.000 i 10.000 godina – tada smo imali posljednji "glacijalni maksimum" – istaknuo je geoarheolog. Fitch je dodao da "znamo da većina ljudske populacije voli živjeti na obali, tako da je vjerojatno da su postojala naselja na današnjem morskom dnu".

"Naš cilj je pronaći dokaze o tim naseljima", naglasio je.

Ovo će biti prva u nizu ekspedicija koje bi se trebale održati u idućih pet godina. Fitch surađuje sa suradnicima sa Sveučilišta u Splitu,​ Flanders Marine instituta (VLIZ) u Belgiji te komercijalnim tvrtkama koje već mapiraju morsko dno dok se pripremaju za postavljanje pučinskih vjetroelektrana.

Superračunala Sveučilišta u Bradfordu koristit će se za analizu podataka i njihov prijenos u mape koje bi mogle otkriti izgubljene krajolike.

"Iz iskustva znamo da ljudi vole živjeti uz obalu, pa kad jednom dokučimo topografiju, možemo napraviti utemeljenu pretpostavku o tome gdje su mogli živjeti u vrijeme kada su razine mora bile mnogo niže nego što su danas", rekla je dr. Jessica Cook Hale sa Sveučilišta Georgia u SAD-u koja se pridružila projektu.

Osim financijskih sredstava iz UKRI-ja, projekt "Life on the Edge" dobio je usluge u vrijednosti 400 tisuća funti od VLIZ-a.

Dva britanska arheologa kreću u Hrvatsku na misiju mapiranja drevnih krajolika izgubljenih u morima prije više tisuća godina, "prvu takve vrste".

Simon Fitch sa Sveučilišta u Bradfordu i Richard Bates sa Sveučilišta St. Andrews doći će u Split na petodnevno istraživanje jadranskog podmorja u sklopu projekta "Life on the Edge" koji će britanska agencija za istraživanje i inovacije (UKRI) financirati s milijun funti.

Pridružit će im se Vedran Barbarić sa Sveučilišta u Splitu, kao dio pilot-tima za mapiranje potopljenih krajolika u dijelovima Jadrana i Sjevernog mora. Te mape će se poslije moći analizirati u potrazi za tragovima o životima ljudi koji su tamo živjeli u kasnom paleolitiku.

– Ovo je prvi put da se netko udaljava više od 500 metara od obale Jadrana kako bi mapirao morsko dno – rekao je dr. Fitch, geoarheolog. "Znamo da su ljudi nekoć živjeli na kopnu tamo dolje jer koćarice redovito iskopavaju artefakte. Ovdje se radi o otkrivanju tko smo kao vrsta i odakle dolazimo", dodao je.

Fitch je rekao da su razine mora bile do 100 metara niže tijekom kasnog paleolitika u usporedbi sa sadašnjošću.

– Imamo nepotpunu sliku povijesti čovječanstva. Ako se vratimo u prošlost, u razdoblje poznato kao kasni paleolitik – dakle, prije između 24.000 i 10.000 godina – tada smo imali posljednji "glacijalni maksimum" – istaknuo je geoarheolog. Fitch je dodao da "znamo da većina ljudske populacije voli živjeti na obali, tako da je vjerojatno da su postojala naselja na današnjem morskom dnu".

"Naš cilj je pronaći dokaze o tim naseljima", naglasio je.

Ovo će biti prva u nizu ekspedicija koje bi se trebale održati u idućih pet godina. Fitch surađuje sa suradnicima sa Sveučilišta u Splitu,​ Flanders Marine instituta (VLIZ) u Belgiji te komercijalnim tvrtkama koje već mapiraju morsko dno dok se pripremaju za postavljanje pučinskih vjetroelektrana.

Superračunala Sveučilišta u Bradfordu koristit će se za analizu podataka i njihov prijenos u mape koje bi mogle otkriti izgubljene krajolike.

"Iz iskustva znamo da ljudi vole živjeti uz obalu, pa kad jednom dokučimo topografiju, možemo napraviti utemeljenu pretpostavku o tome gdje su mogli živjeti u vrijeme kada su razine mora bile mnogo niže nego što su danas", rekla je dr. Jessica Cook Hale sa Sveučilišta Georgia u SAD-u koja se pridružila projektu.

Osim financijskih sredstava iz UKRI-ja, projekt "Life on the Edge" dobio je usluge u vrijednosti 400 tisuća funti od VLIZ-a.

Dva britanska arheologa kreću u Hrvatsku na misiju mapiranja drevnih krajolika izgubljenih u morima prije više tisuća godina, "prvu takve vrste".

Simon Fitch sa Sveučilišta u Bradfordu i Richard Bates sa Sveučilišta St. Andrews doći će u Split na petodnevno istraživanje jadranskog podmorja u sklopu projekta "Life on the Edge" koji će britanska agencija za istraživanje i inovacije (UKRI) financirati s milijun funti.

Pridružit će im se Vedran Barbarić sa Sveučilišta u Splitu, kao dio pilot-tima za mapiranje potopljenih krajolika u dijelovima Jadrana i Sjevernog mora. Te mape će se poslije moći analizirati u potrazi za tragovima o životima ljudi koji su tamo živjeli u kasnom paleolitiku.
