Thomas Auckland, kapetan 37-metarske jahte SY Genevieve, spasio je prošlog tjedna 16 ljudi iz mora na Karibima.

Riječ je bila o migrantima koji upali u more nakon što im se prevrnuo mali ribarski brod koji ih je prevozio s Antigue u St. Thomas. Smatra se da je još 16 ljudi poginulo u ovoj nesreći.

S Yachting Worldom, Auckland je podijelio svoja iskustva:

- Dok smo plovili od Antiguea do Saint Maartena, čuli smo ženski vrisak. Utihnuli smo motor i jasno čuli nove krikove. Pozvali smo pomoć i upalili reflektore oko broda kako bi locirali ženu koja se glasala.

U moru smo ugledali čovjeka kako se drži za dio oštećenog prsluka za spašavanje i uspjeli smo ga izvući na krmu. Bio je bez svijesti.

Oko 400 metara od njega naišli smo na ženu koja se držala za plastičnu bačvu. Izvukli smo je i ona je ispričala kako je na ribarskom brodu bilo 32 osobe. Brod se putem pokvario, more je prodrlo u kokpit i na koncu se prevrnuo.

Ispalio sam tada i dvije signalne rakete i nastavio potragu. Oko milju dalje, ugledali smo prevrnuti brod za koji se grčevito držalo desetak ljudi... - ispričao je kapetan koji se odlično snašao u ovoj nezgodnoj situaciji kada treba mudro i smireno reagirati. Svakom svom članu posade dao je ulogu: bacanje konopa za spašavanje, komunikacija s unesrećenima, izvlačenje, osiguranje brodova, trijaža unesrećenih, osvjetljenje...

- Bacili smo unesrećenima dyneema konop, ali su oni oklijevali povjeriti se užetu. Samo su dvije osobe nosile prsluke za spašavanje (za koje se pokazalo da su upravljali brodom) i većina njih nije znala plivati.

Kasnije smo shvatili da su ti ljudi nosili svu odjeću koju su posjedovali, često tri para traperica, i svaki preko šest gornjih slojeva, što je očito činilo plivanje vrlo opasnim - rekao je Auckland koji je zahvaljujući timskom radu svoje posade uspio izvući sve te ljude osim jednog koji je nažalost pao s trupa broda, te ga nisu mogli pronaći.

- Događaji su potom ušli u novu fazu. Bio sam svjestan da imamo 16 migranata na brodu, od kojih su 13 bili muškarci, o kojima nismo znali ništa osim činjenice da su bili spremni riskirati svoje živote prokrijumčareni preko St Thomasa. Sve su žrtve dobile vodu, slatke napitke, hranu i deke te su grupirane u kokpitu.

Bili smo na liniji s MRCC Fort du France, koji je tražio da ostanemo na mjestu događaja dok ne stigne podrška. Budući da je očito postojao sigurnosni rizik na brodu, dobili smo dopuštenje da napustimo mjesto događaja i uputili smo se izravno u Basseterre u St Kittsu, koji je udaljen otprilike 34 milje.

Kad je dan svanuo, stigla je Obalna straža, a prestravljeni državljani Kameruna bili su nam iznimno zahvalni - ispričao je kapetan, iznimno ponosan na svoju posadu koja je donijela razumne i dobre odluke. Poručio je da posada nikad ne smije podcjeniti važnost dobrog držanja straže, te naravno, timski rad i profesionalnost.

Nakon ovog događaja, posada SY Genevieve pokrenula je web stranicu JustGiving za prikupljanje sredstava za pomoć Kameruncima koji su ostali na Antigui, a sredstva su namijenjena pružanju osnovnog smještaja, sanitarnih uvjeta i hrane za ovu zajednicu koja riskira u potrazi za boljim životom.

Nakon uvođenja čarter letova između Nigerije i Antigue u studenom 2022., vjeruje se da je oko 600 putnika iz problematičnih zapadnoafričkih zemalja ostalo na otoku Antigua. U nemogućnosti da kupe karte za željenu destinaciju, mnogi svoje živote povjere krijumčarima preko mora.

Thomas Auckland, kapetan 37-metarske jahte SY Genevieve, spasio je prošlog tjedna 16 ljudi iz mora na Karibima.

Riječ je bila o migrantima koji upali u more nakon što im se prevrnuo mali ribarski brod koji ih je prevozio s Antigue u St. Thomas. Smatra se da je još 16 ljudi poginulo u ovoj nesreći.

- Dok smo plovili od Antiguea do Saint Maartena, čuli smo ženski vrisak. Utihnuli smo motor i jasno čuli nove krikove. Pozvali smo pomoć i upalili reflektore oko broda kako bi locirali ženu koja se glasala.

U moru smo ugledali čovjeka kako se drži za dio oštećenog prsluka za spašavanje i uspjeli smo ga izvući na krmu. Bio je bez svijesti.

Oko 400 metara od njega naišli smo na ženu koja se držala za plastičnu bačvu. Izvukli smo je i ona je ispričala kako je na ribarskom brodu bilo 32 osobe. Brod se putem pokvario, more je prodrlo u kokpit i na koncu se prevrnuo.

Ispalio sam tada i dvije signalne rakete i nastavio potragu. Oko milju dalje, ugledali smo prevrnuti brod za koji se grčevito držalo desetak ljudi... - ispričao je kapetan koji se odlično snašao u ovoj nezgodnoj situaciji kada treba mudro i smireno reagirati. Svakom svom članu posade dao je ulogu: bacanje konopa za spašavanje, komunikacija s unesrećenima, izvlačenje, osiguranje brodova, trijaža unesrećenih, osvjetljenje...

- Bacili smo unesrećenima dyneema konop, ali su oni oklijevali povjeriti se užetu. Samo su dvije osobe nosile prsluke za spašavanje (za koje se pokazalo da su upravljali brodom) i većina njih nije znala plivati.

Kasnije smo shvatili da su ti ljudi nosili svu odjeću koju su posjedovali, često tri para traperica, i svaki preko šest gornjih slojeva, što je očito činilo plivanje vrlo opasnim - rekao je Auckland koji je zahvaljujući timskom radu svoje posade uspio izvući sve te ljude osim jednog koji je nažalost pao s trupa broda, te ga nisu mogli pronaći.

- Događaji su potom ušli u novu fazu. Bio sam svjestan da imamo 16 migranata na brodu, od kojih su 13 bili muškarci, o kojima nismo znali ništa osim činjenice da su bili spremni riskirati svoje živote prokrijumčareni preko St Thomasa. Sve su žrtve dobile vodu, slatke napitke, hranu i deke te su grupirane u kokpitu.

Bili smo na liniji s MRCC Fort du France, koji je tražio da ostanemo na mjestu događaja dok ne stigne podrška. Budući da je očito postojao sigurnosni rizik na brodu, dobili smo dopuštenje da napustimo mjesto događaja i uputili smo se izravno u Basseterre u St Kittsu, koji je udaljen otprilike 34 milje.

Kad je dan svanuo, stigla je Obalna straža, a prestravljeni državljani Kameruna bili su nam iznimno zahvalni - ispričao je kapetan, iznimno ponosan na svoju posadu koja je donijela razumne i dobre odluke. Poručio je da posada nikad ne smije podcjeniti važnost dobrog držanja straže, te naravno, timski rad i profesionalnost.

Nakon ovog događaja, posada SY Genevieve pokrenula je web stranicu JustGiving za prikupljanje sredstava za pomoć Kameruncima koji su ostali na Antigui, a sredstva su namijenjena pružanju osnovnog smještaja, sanitarnih uvjeta i hrane za ovu zajednicu koja riskira u potrazi za boljim životom.

Nakon uvođenja čarter letova između Nigerije i Antigue u studenom 2022., vjeruje se da je oko 600 putnika iz problematičnih zapadnoafričkih zemalja ostalo na otoku Antigua. U nemogućnosti da kupe karte za željenu destinaciju, mnogi svoje živote povjere krijumčarima preko mora.

Thomas Auckland, kapetan 37-metarske jahte SY Genevieve, spasio je prošlog tjedna 16 ljudi iz mora na Karibima.

Riječ je bila o migrantima koji upali u more nakon što im se prevrnuo mali ribarski brod koji ih je prevozio s Antigue u St. Thomas. Smatra se da je još 16 ljudi poginulo u ovoj nesreći.

S Yachting Worldom, Auckland je podijelio svoja iskustva:
